Setup guide
Let’s get your StepSafe set up
It takes about ten minutes. The app walks you through the same steps, and you can stop and pick up where you left off at any time.
In the box
- Your StepSafe device, with its activation code engraved on it and its IMEI printed on it
- A clip to wear it
- A USB-C charging cable
- A setup card with links to this guide and the app
Step 1: Charge it
Connect the USB-C cable to the port on the edge of the device and charge it for about an hour before its first day out. You can carry on with the next steps while it charges.
Step 2: Get the app and sign in
Install the StepSafe app on your phone and sign in with your email address. We email you a 6-digit code, so there is no password to remember. You can also continue with Google, or with Apple on an iPhone.
- Coming soon toApp Store
- Coming soon toGoogle Play
The app is coming soon to the App Store and Google Play.
Step 3: Find the two codes on your device
The app asks for two codes. Together they connect this device to your account, so keep the device nearby when you reach that step.
- The activation code is engraved on the StepSafe device itself.
- The IMEI is a 15-digit number printed on the device and on its box.
There is no QR code to scan. If the engraving is hard to read, tilt the device toward a light.
Step 4: Pair it in the app
When the app reaches Connect your device, enter the IMEI and the activation code exactly as they appear. Then switch the device on and watch the ring on the front: it flashes red, blue and green, then checks in with us. That usually takes under a minute. Indoors, keep it near a window.
The app then asks who will wear it and a nickname for them. A first name is plenty: it is how they appear on the map and in every alert.
Device not here yet? You can skip this and finish setting up, then add the device any time later from Home.
Step 5: Mark your first safe zone
A safe zone is a place like home or school. StepSafe tells you the moment they leave one. Your first safe zone is placed where your phone is, so if you are not at home, drag it to your home before saving.
You can add more safe zones, and change this one, any time in Zones.
After that, when you are ready
The app suggests these next. Each one can be skipped and set up later.
- Water zones: The app looks for pools, ponds and rivers near your safe zone and suggests water zones. Keep the ones that matter.
- Busy roads: Danger zones along highways and railway tracks. They only alert on foot, so car rides never set them off.
- How we tell you: An alarm rings even when your phone is on silent. A notification is a normal ping.
- Caregivers: Invite a partner, relative, teacher or sitter. They get the alerts you choose for them.
Our water hazard worksheet helps you spot the water a map can miss, like a neighbour’s pool.
If something is not working
The codes will not work
Check each character of the IMEI and the engraved code, and try again. If the app says the device is on another account, the family who had it can remove it in their Settings. If it still will not work, email us with your order number.
The device has not checked in
Make sure it is charged and switched on, then give it a few minutes outdoors or near a window. You can carry on with setup meanwhile. If it still does not appear, email us.
I cannot read the code, or my device has not arrived
Email us with your order number. We can look up your device's codes, or tell you where your parcel is.
There are more answers in the app: tap the question mark at the top of Home.
Need a hand?
Email us at support@stepsafekids.com. A real person replies to every email, usually within a day. If you have your order number, include it.
Stuck partway through setup? Close the app and come back whenever you are ready. It picks up where you left off.
Is someone missing right now?
Call 911 first. Then open StepSafe and tap I can’t find on Home. That turns on lost mode and puts every search tool in one place.
