Sponsor a device for a family who cannot afford one

Families keep telling us the same thing: they need a StepSafe device for their child and they cannot pay for it. This page is for businesses who want to change that.

The problem

Nearly half of autistic children try to leave a safe place once they turn four.[1] When they are not found in time, accidental drowning accounts for 71 percent of the deaths that follow,[2] and autistic children are 160 times as likely to die from drowning as other children.[3]

The equipment built for exactly this problem is priced beyond the families who need it most. The best known device on the market costs US$44.99 to US$64.99 every month, indefinitely, and that is before any one time fee.[4] Over five years that is thousands of dollars for a piece of safety equipment.

StepSafe is CA$159 for the device and CA$19.99 a month, or CA$399 once with no monthly fee for the life of the device.[5] Even at that price, cost is still the single most common reason a family tells us they cannot have one.

What sponsorship does

CA$349 sponsors one device for a family who cannot afford one, with service for the life of the device. The family never receives a bill. Not in year one, not in year five, not ever.

What sponsors get

Your name on this page

Your logo and a link, in the Our sponsors section below, for as long as this page exists. It is the page we send to every business who asks about sponsoring.

Named in the update every backer receives

Our Kickstarter backers receive a written update on the project, and sponsors are named in it. They are an audience who already put money into this problem.

Included in the press coverage that follows

Journalists have covered StepSafe three times and keep asking what happens next. Sponsored devices reaching families is that story, and sponsors are named in it.

We do not photograph or name the children who receive devices. The story we tell is about the sponsorship programme and the businesses funding it.

How devices reach families

Devices are distributed through non-profit partners like Sabella Fae’s Ausome Adventures, who assess need. We do not decide which families receive them, and neither do sponsors.

Two guarantees. Your money becomes devices or you get it back. And sponsors never receive data about a child or a family: no name, no location, no photograph.

Press coverage

Three newsrooms have written about StepSafe, and one of those pieces ran in four more titles. None of it was paid for.

905hub shared the campaign with their audience, and NOW Toronto ran it on Threads as well as on their site. Closing The Gap, the assistive technology guide, listed us after their VP reached out. Kickstarter named the campaign a Project We Love, and Gadget Flow rates us 9.1.
